Early Childhood Education
Our vision of A Child’s Haven Preschool is a Christian environment where the uniqueness of all children is celebrated. Every child is encouraged to explore, to learn, and to grow to his or her potential. The mission of our preschool is to provide an educational environment in which the Christian faith will be reflected. We will provide early childhood education for children which are developmentally appropriate, intellectually stimulating, and spiritually nurturing in a safe, loving preschool environment.
Our program philosophy is based on the premise that children learn about the world around them through play (active involvement with other children, adults, and materials). Learning takes place as young children touch, manipulate, and experiment with things and interact with people. The emphasis is on the experiences of the children rather than the results of those experiences. For examples, painting is more important than what has been painted; building with blocks is more important than what is built. Days are filled with planned and spontaneous moments of learning. There’s time for active outdoor play, imaginative games, independent discovery and group time experiences..

A Child’s Haven bases its curriculum on the philosophy that children learn through play. Our curriculum emphasizes a “hands on” approach to learning. Classroom lessons provide active involvement, meaningful exploration, and reinforcement through repetition. Daily schedules are designed to balance structure and free choice, as well as active and quiet times. Skills are introduced through materials and activities which are both child-centered and teacher-directed. Activities are planned which emphasize the process instead of the product, fostering a sense of achievement and self-worth. Equipment, materials, and activities are chosen based on the appropriate ages and stages of the child’s development. We follow the Texas Early Childhood Guidelines in our younger classes and the Texas Pre-Kindergarten Guidelines in our Pre-K class.
The Kinder Bridge class utilizes the Get Set For School and Handwriting without Tears curriculum from Learning Without Tears. This class is designed for children who have completed a pre-k class or who have an early fall birthday. The class provides a “gift of time” so to speak, in that it gives children extra time for development of important skills before attending an actual kindergarten class.
A Child’s Haven provides a Christian environment where God’s love is celebrated. Each week the teachers present a bible story to the children in a developmentally appropriate way. Prayer is used appropriately throughout the day. Songs with A Christian message are used in the classroom on a regular basis. Children attend chapel once a week to listen to a lesson and sing with the pastors. Each month the children learn about a different Fruit of the Spirit, which uses fruit to teach about the characteristics of Jesus.
Physical development is an important part of growth for all children. All classes attend music and movement each day. Teachers lead the classes in dancing and different movement activities that help the children develop and refine their gross motor skills.
Children engage in daily art activities in their classrooms. They enjoy doing crafts and other artistic projects related to our weekly planned themes. The emphasis is on developing a love for art and of free expression.
Our 4's program prepares children for kindergarten by teaching the foundations of math, language art's and corporation. Children learn letter recognition, phonics, sight words and math. The use of critical thinking skills to make predictions is taught along with hands on science experiments. Guided Language/Literacy and math centers are a part of each week. The children grow academically, socially and emotionally with activities that are fun and engaging, for the perfect day.
